The Shifting Heart was written by Richard Beynon in 1957. It provides insight into the psychology of racism and its victims. Set in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood on Christmas Eve 1956, the play explores tensions between three sets of neighbours: the Bianchis, the Pratts, and the Fowlers.  The Bianchi's daughter Maria and her Australian husband, Clarrie Fowler are expecting a child. These families represent different aspects of Australian culture at the time, and racism and the impact of immigration are central themesThe story revolves around the Italian immigrant family living in Collingwood: parents Poppa and Momma, and their adult son Gino, daughter Maria and son-in-law Clarrie Fowler.
